Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus files writ to limit Attorney General’s role in redistricting case

BATON ROUGE, La. — The Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus filed a writ of mandamus Friday against Attorney General Elizabeth “Liz” Murrill, accusing her of exceeding her authority in the state’s ongoing redistricting litigation.

The filing comes in response to Murrill’s decision to submit a supplemental brief in Callais v. Landry, a federal case examining whether Louisiana’s congressional map violates Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. Caucus leaders say the Attorney General’s move was not authorized by the Legislature and undermines the state’s official position.

“The Attorney General’s unilateral decision to file a supplemental brief not only misrepresents the position of the state but also disrupts the constitutional balance of power in Louisiana,” caucus chairman Rep. Edmond Jordan, D-Baton Rouge, said in a statement.

The writ seeks a judicial order preventing Murrill from further intervening in the case without legislative approval. The caucus argues her actions amount to political overreach and could weaken protections for Black voters in Louisiana.

“This is not just about redistricting—it’s about protecting democratic institutions from abuse,” Jordan said. “Our communities have fought for generations to be fairly represented. We will not allow the Attorney General to use her office as a political tool to silence Black voters or block fair maps.”

The dispute underscores deep political divisions over Louisiana’s redistricting process, which has drawn national scrutiny for its impact on minority representation.

Murrill’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
