BAKER, La. — Not even the rain could stop Mayor Darnell Waites from showing love to the real MVPs this week—Baker’s teachers.

Armed with 22 boxes of fresh, warm donuts from Tasty Cream Donuts on Main Street, Mayor Waites hit the streets early Wednesday morning to make surprise deliveries to five schools: Baker High, Baker Middle, Park Ridge Academic Magnet, Advantage Charter, and Impact Charter.

“This is just a small token for such a great vocation,” Mayor Waites said. “To be an educator is a wonderful superpower that should never go unnoticed.”

His donut drop-off is part of a weeklong celebration for Teacher Appreciation Week. And he’s not stopping there—Mayor Waites is also providing lunch later this week for the staff at Baker Heights Elementary.

While teachers often feel supported inside their schools, many say the world outside the classroom doesn’t always respect what they do. Experts say the rise of college degrees and online learning has chipped away at the unique value once placed on teaching. And harmful sayings like “those who can, do; those who can’t, teach” only add insult to injury.

Mayor Waites isn’t having it.

“Teachers train the nation’s most brilliant minds,” he said. “We should lift them up, not tear them down.”

His gesture was simple, but powerful—proof that even a box of donuts can carry a message: Baker sees its teachers, values them, and knows they are essential.
