Louisiana SNAP to Ban Candy and Sugary Drinks Starting February
Louisiana residents using SNAP benefits will no longer be able to buy candy, soda, or energy drinks starting Feb. 18. The move aims to promote healthier diets. Still, it raises concerns for shoppers and retailers alike.
BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana SNAP recipients will face new restrictions starting Feb. 18: candy, soda, and energy drinks will no longer be eligible for purchase. The change is implemented under a federal waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which allows 18 states to limit the availability sugary foods and drinks for SNAP users.
Gov. Jeff Landry said the ban is part of a broader effort to reduce obesity and diet-related chronic diseases. “SNAP beneficiaries are more likely to have higher rates of obesity,” he said.
Some SNAP users worry the restrictions will strain tight household budgets, especially as grocery prices remain high. Nutrition experts point out that frozen and canned fruits and vegetables—without added sugar or salt—remain affordable and nutritious alternatives.
Retailers warn the policy could create operational challenges. Updating checkout systems, training staff, and identifying restricted items will increase costs, particularly for smaller stores. Some worry the changes could reduce SNAP participation in rural and underserved areas.
While candy and sugary drinks are off-limits, SNAP still covers fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy, and grains, giving families options to maintain a balanced diet.
