Baton Rouge Expands LED Streetlights to Enhance Safety

BATON ROUGE, La. —Baton Rouge officials say hundreds of new LED streetlights have been installed across East Baton Rouge Parish as part of the city’s “Lighting up Baton Rouge” initiative aimed at boosting safety and quality of life.

The Office of Mayor-President Sid Edwards announced Wednesday that Entergy crews replaced 407 outdated high-pressure sodium bulbs with LED fixtures in the Scotlandville area. The upgrades are part of a collaboration between the City-Parish, Together Baton Rouge, District 2 Councilman Anthony Kenney, and District 3 Public Service Commissioner Davante Lewis.

In May, 50 LED lights were added along Plank Road between Airline Highway and Florida Boulevard under a MOVEBR project. Since then, installations have expanded to Sherwood Forest Boulevard, Goodwood Boulevard and the Broadmoor subdivision.

Downtown is also seeing upgrades through a two-phase project with the Downtown Development District, which city leaders say will help reduce crime, improve visibility and encourage activity in the city’s core.

“Lighting is one of the simplest yet most impactful ways to deter crime and encourage activity downtown,” Edwards said in a statement. “Every improvement we make helps restore confidence in our neighborhoods and strengthens the quality of life for everyone in Baton Rouge.”

City officials said additional lighting projects are planned in the coming months through continued coordination with Entergy and community groups.
