BATON ROUGE, La. — A small act of kindness more than a decade ago has grown into a lasting legacy for children at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital.

At just five years old, Jade noticed she had more toys than she needed and wanted to give back. Her mother said the family reached out to OLOL to see what items were most needed, and Jade chose blankets. That decision became the seed of what is now The Jade Cares Foundation.

This year marks the 11th anniversary of Jade’s annual blanket drive. Over the years, she has donated more than 2,000 blankets, offering warmth and comfort to children and families during some of their most challenging days.

Parents have been deeply touched by the initiative. “I had no idea how much difference a soft, comforting blanket could make! Your efforts mean so much to me and my family,” said one parent whose child received a blanket.

The latest delivery was especially memorable, with Senator Regina Barrow, Speaker Pro Tempore, joining the event. Barrow has supported Jade’s efforts since the beginning. Baton Rouge Delta Alumnae Chapter President LaConga Hilliard Scott, MSW, and GEMS Co-Chair Sherice J., where Jade is a mentee, were also present.

Jade’s mother expressed pride not only in her daughter’s accomplishments but in the young woman she is becoming. “Her compassion reminds us that true leadership isn’t about age or titles—it’s about seeing a need and choosing to meet it with heart,” she said.

The Jade Cares Foundation continues to grow, inspiring young people and families alike to find ways to make a difference in their communities.
