New Tool Aims to Protect Louisiana Families From Vaccine Confusion
Because Louisiana law often follows these recommendations, any federal changes could affect school vaccine requirements, Medicaid coverage, and what vaccines hospitals and pharmacies can offer.

Baton Rouge, LA — Families across Louisiana now have a new way to understand how vaccines are handled in the state—and what could change if federal guidance shifts. The Vaccine Policy Atlas, released this week by American Families for Vaccines (AFV), maps how Louisiana laws rely on recommendations from the CDC and the federal Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).

ACIP decides which vaccines Americans should get and when. Because Louisiana law often follows these recommendations, any federal changes could affect school vaccine requirements, Medicaid coverage, and what vaccines hospitals and pharmacies can offer.

“This tool gives families and policymakers a clear picture of how vaccine rules actually work in Louisiana,” said Northe Saunders, president of AFV. “It shows what is protected and where state laws depend on federal guidance—so everyone can plan if recommendations change.”

The Atlas breaks down complicated laws into easy-to-understand guidance. Highlights include:

  • Schools and Daycares: Vaccination schedules follow ACIP guidance, including meningococcal requirements.
  • Pharmacists: Can give certain vaccines according to both state and federal rules.
  • Medicaid Coverage: Children, teens, and adults are covered for ACIP-recommended vaccines.
  • Hospitals and Care Facilities: Must offer recommended vaccines and provide clear information to patients and residents every year.

By clarifying how state and federal rules intersect, the Atlas aims to prevent confusion and help keep vaccines accessible for everyone.
