Gerald “Gee” Collins II Brings Education and Youth Experience to Baker School Board Race
Gerald “Gee” Collins II is bringing more than a decade of education and youth-development experience to his campaign for Baker City School Board, District 3.
BAKER, La. — Gerald “Gee” Collins II is seeking election to the Baker City School Board, District 3, bringing more than a decade of experience in education, youth development and community service to the race.
Collins qualified for the District 3 seat Aug. 7, according to public candidate records. His campaign places an educator with classroom, literacy and youth-development experience among the candidates seeking a role in shaping the future of Baker’s public schools.
Education has been central to Collins’ professional career.
He previously taught with IDEA Public Schools in Brownsville, Texas, where his campaign says 90% of his students performed at or above grade level on the DIBELS assessment. He later became a founding teacher at an IDEA charter school in Baton Rouge.
Collins currently serves as a district literacy mentor with the East Baton Rouge Parish School System and tutors students after school, giving him experience working with students both inside and beyond the traditional classroom.
His academic background also reflects a commitment to education and ministry. Collins studied theology and religion at Oral Roberts University, Louisiana College and LSU. He earned a master’s degree in Instruction and Curriculum from American College of Education and is pursuing an Ed.D. in Education.
His connection to Baker extends into youth and community service.
For six years, Collins has volunteered with the Baker Area Sports Association and coached with the Buffalo Soldiers Sports Organization. The Baker Area Sports Association lists Collins as a trustee.
He has also served for five years as ACT director for the Rotary Club of Baker Interact GBR and worked as a Freedom School counselor at Beech Grove Baptist Church.
School board responsibilities extend beyond academic instruction. Board members help oversee issues involving student achievement, personnel, budgets, facilities, programs and the relationship between schools, families and the broader community.
Collins’ campaign centers on bringing his experience as an educator, literacy specialist, tutor, coach, and community volunteer to that work.
For Collins, the campaign represents another opportunity to work on behalf of young people — this time from the school board table.
The District 3 race will allow Baker voters to consider the backgrounds, experience and priorities of the candidates seeking to represent them on the school board.
