BATON ROUGE — CareSouth is investing nearly $3 million in Southern University to support students, academic programs, athletics, and the university’s nationally recognized Human Jukebox during the university’s 2026 homecoming celebration.

CareSouth presented the contribution to Southern University leaders Wednesday, directing the funding to several areas, including the Southern University School of Nursing, Southern athletics, the Human Jukebox and the Southern University Foundation.

The major investment comes as Southern University continues to strengthen its role in preparing students for careers and developing a skilled workforce for Louisiana and beyond.

Southern Interim President Dr. Orlando McMeans said corporate partnerships such as the one with CareSouth can directly benefit students while helping build a workforce that meets the needs of employers.

“The goal to support students, help them matriculate and also prepare a workforce that will feed into entities and organizations such as CareSouth,” McMeans said.

McMeans said Southern University has a deep pool of talented students whose education and professional preparation can contribute to industries throughout the state.

“We have a lot of talented young people who are matriculating through our university and university system,” he said. “People value what we can bring to their respective workforces.”

CareSouth Investment Supports Southern University Programs

The nearly $3 million contribution will benefit several important areas of Southern University.

The School of Nursing is among the programs receiving support, connecting the investment to the preparation of healthcare professionals. Funding also will support Southern athletics and the Human Jukebox, one of the university’s most prominent cultural and musical traditions.

The Southern University Foundation also will receive funding to support broader university priorities.

The contribution comes during Southern University’s homecoming, an annual celebration that brings students, alumni, families and supporters together on the Baton Rouge campus.

While the donation was announced during homecoming, its impact is expected to extend beyond the celebration.

For Southern University, investments in academic programs and student opportunities can help students complete their education, develop professional skills, and transition into careers.

The CareSouth contribution also highlights the importance of partnerships between corporations and historically Black colleges and universities in supporting education, workforce development, and programs that have a lasting impact on students and their communities.

As Southern University celebrates homecoming, the nearly $3 million CareSouth investment provides additional resources for the university’s students and programs while reinforcing Southern’s role in preparing the next generation of Louisiana’s workforce.
