Terrell Owens Calls on ESPN to Suspend Stephen A. Smith After Lane Johnson Remarks
Excerpt: Former NFL receiver Terrell Owens says ESPN should discipline Smith over comments about Lane Johnson’s retirement and mental health. Smith has apologized, but the controversy has renewed debate about how sports media discuss athletes’ well-being.
Former NFL star Terrell Owens is calling on ESPN to suspend commentator Stephen A. Smith after Smith questioned Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Lane Johnson’s decision to retire and focus on his mental health.
Johnson, 36, announced his retirement Oct. 6 after 14 seasons with the Eagles. In his statement, he said his personal and family priorities had changed and that focusing on his mental health had become critical. His career included six Pro Bowl selections and two Super Bowl championships.
During an Oct. 7 episode of ESPN’s “First Take,” Smith questioned the timing of Johnson’s decision and spoke in a mocking tone while discussing his stated reason. Co-host Kimberley A. Martin challenged Smith during the segment, saying he appeared to be making light of the situation.
Smith later apologized on “First Take,” saying he was wrong to Johnson and the Eagles and had made light of mental health. He said his intent was to criticize the team’s situation, but acknowledged that intent did not excuse how his remarks came across.
Owens addressed the controversy on his “Get TO The Point” podcast. He questioned why Smith had not faced consequences, arguing that Smith’s platform carries responsibility when discussing a sensitive subject that affects many people. Owens also said Smith’s experience behind a microphone did not give him the same perspective as a player dealing with the pressures of professional football.
Owens’ call for a suspension is his opinion; ESPN had not publicly announced discipline for Smith as of Oct. 14. The dispute has put the focus on more than one apology: It has raised questions about how sports commentators can scrutinize athletes’ decisions while treating mental health with care.
