WASHINGTON — House Democrats, led by Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA), filed a discharge petition Tuesday to force a vote on legislation that would protect Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) from proposed Republican budget cuts.

The Democrats’ move comes as Republicans are pushing for significant reductions in social safety net programs to offset tax cuts for wealthy individuals and corporations. House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA) and other Democratic leaders condemned the proposed cuts as “unacceptable, unconscionable, and un-American.”

“House Republicans are determined to jam a reckless and extreme budget down the throats of the American people that will enact the largest cut to Medicaid and the largest cut to SNAP in American history,” said House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). “Children, families, women, veterans, older Americans, people with disabilities, and everyday Americans will be hurt.”

Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ), former chair of the Energy and Commerce Committee, highlighted the potential impact on healthcare, stating, “They know their constituents would be negatively impacted by these Medicaid cuts, whether it’s nursing homes or it’s people who just lose their health insurance or people with disabilities.”

Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN), the top Democrat on the Agriculture Committee, focused on the proposed SNAP cuts, noting that Republicans aim to cut $230 billion from the program. “Doing that would roll back… the SNAP program [which] provides $6.20 on average to hungry Americans… to five bucks at a time when the nation’s food costs are out of control,” Craig said.

The discharge petition, if signed by a majority of the House, would force a vote on the Democrats’ “Hands Off Medicaid and SNAP” legislation. Democrats are urging moderate Republicans to join their effort. “All we need are four House Republicans to join Democrats in protecting the health care and nutritional assistance of the American people,” Jeffries said.

Republicans have defended their proposed cuts, citing concerns about fraud and abuse within the programs. However, Democrats argue that the cuts are primarily aimed at funding tax breaks for the wealthy.

“This is all being done in service of rewarding their donors like Elon Musk, and it is unacceptable,” Jeffries said.

The Democrats’ push comes amid growing concerns about the impact of the proposed budget cuts on vulnerable populations. They argue that the cuts would exacerbate existing economic hardships and lead to increased healthcare costs in the long run.

“This is not some abstract Washington DC issue,” Boyle stated. “44% of my constituents in working-class neighborhoods of Philadelphia… are on Medicaid. My neighbors will have their lives deeply impacted in a negative way if these Medicaid cuts go through.”

The situation remains fluid, with Democrats actively seeking Republican support for their discharge petition. The outcome could have significant implications for millions of Americans who rely on Medicaid and SNAP benefits.
