BATON ROUGE, La. — Southern University’s Homecoming weekend is getting a major dose of star power as acclaimed pianist, composer, producer and musical director Patrice Rushen headlines the 24th Annual Gala on the Bluff.

Presented by the Southern University College of Business, the gala is set for Friday, Oct. 2, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. at L’Auberge Casino Hotel Baton Rouge, 777 L’Auberge Ave.

But this is more than a night of entertainment.

A Party With a Purpose

The Gala on the Bluff is an annual scholarship fundraiser supporting students in Southern University’s College of Business. The event brings together alumni, business leaders, corporations and community supporters for an evening designed to celebrate Southern while helping students pursue their education and prepare for careers in business and leadership.

This year's lineup makes the celebration even more compelling.

Rushen will headline an evening that also features the Royal Essence Band from New Orleans and the Harry Anderson Jazz Group from Baton Rouge.

Rushen has built an extraordinary career across jazz, R&B, classical and pop music. A classically trained pianist, she is known for the enduring hit “Forget Me Nots” and has worked with some of the biggest names in music, including Stevie Wonder, Prince, Herbie Hancock and George Benson.

She also made history as the first woman to serve as musical director for the Grammy Awards, Emmy Awards and NAACP Image Awards.

Joining Rushen will be the Royal Essence Band, bringing the energy and musical flavor of New Orleans, while the Harry Anderson Jazz Group will add the sophisticated sounds of Baton Rouge jazz.

New Orleans brings the groove. Baton Rouge brings the jazz. Patrice Rushen brings the star power. Southern brings the purpose.
