Baton Rouge native’s new book explores love, compromise and the differences that bring couples together
Derek Payne’s new book uses the familiar debate over tofu and bacon to examine how couples can build lasting relationships without sharing every lifestyle choice.
BATON ROUGE, La. — Derek Payne believes a relationship does not have to be built around the same plate.
The Baton Rouge native and entrepreneur has released Love at First Bite: Because Love Is Stronger Than Bacon, a humorous, heartfelt guide for couples navigating relationships where one partner is vegan and the other is not.
Drawing from his own experiences, Payne uses the contrast between tofu and bacon to explore a larger question: How can couples respect their differences without allowing them to become sources of division?
The book combines relatable stories, practical advice, and humor to encourage communication, understanding, and compromise. Its message extends beyond food choices to the everyday lifestyle differences that can test a relationship.
“Whether your relationship includes tofu, bacon, or both, love can always find a place at the table,” Payne says. “This book is about proving that our differences don't have to divide us.”
Payne’s background includes both athletic achievement and entrepreneurship. He graduated from Southern University Laboratory High School, where he was a member of five state championship teams — two in football and three in track and field. He later graduated from Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi.
Now living in Columbus, Ohio, Payne owns DPI Graphic Design and has spent years helping businesses build their brands. His latest work reflects his interest in helping couples strengthen their relationships while celebrating what makes each person different.
The book is intended for dating couples, newlyweds, longtime married couples, book clubs, relationship ministries, and anyone seeking a fresh perspective on love, communication, and lifestyle differences.
