Trump Shares False Denzel Washington Endorsement
Excerpt: A quote praising President Donald Trump that was attributed to actor Denzel Washington has no credible evidence behind it, according to a recent fact-check.
President Donald Trump shared a social media post Sunday that falsely attributed a political endorsement to actor Denzel Washington.
The post, from the account Red Eagle Updates, claimed Washington had called Trump exceptionally brave and smart and said he was a steadfast supporter. It asked users whether they agreed with the alleged remarks. Trump shared the post on Truth Social.
A Snopes fact-check published Oct. 10 found no credible evidence that Washington made the statement. The same wording has also been falsely attributed online to actor Matthew McConaughey and Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger, Snopes reported.
The claim echoes earlier fabricated stories linking Washington to Trump. In 2021, Washington’s representative told FactCheck.org that a separate viral claim about the actor’s political views was fabricated. FactCheck.org also documented false claims about Washington endorsing Trump that circulated in 2016 and 2018.
The recent post does not establish Washington’s political position. It does, however, repeat an endorsement claim that fact-checkers could not substantiate.
