Jasmine Guy Urges Kindness After Criticism of Her Appearance
As “A Different World” introduces another generation of students, Jasmine Guy is urging viewers to embrace aging and recognize beauty beyond youth.
Nearly four decades after Jasmine Guy first brought Whitley Gilbert to television, “A Different World” has returned with its characters entering a new stage of life. For Guy, the reunion has also brought unwelcome scrutiny of her appearance.
The 64-year-old actress responded on Instagram, challenging the treatment of women as they age.
“The internet can be brutal to women as we grow older,” she wrote, acknowledging change while encouraging kindness, connection and joy. Cornell Young IV, Felicia Pride and Tina Knowles offered support.
The sequel, which premiered Sept. 24 on Netflix, moves the story forward rather than keeping its familiar characters in their college years. Guy and Kadeem Hardison return as Whitley and Dwayne Wayne, whose youngest daughter, Deborah, begins her freshman year at Hillman College.
Played by Maleah Joi Moon, Deborah struggles to establish an identity beyond her parents’ legacy at the fictional historically Black college. The 10-episode season reunites original cast members including Cree Summer, Darryl M. Bell, Charnele Brown and Dawnn Lewis. Pride serves as showrunner and executive producer, with Debbie Allen returning as executive producer and director of the premiere. The original aired on NBC from 1987 to 1993.
Guy’s career has continued well beyond Hillman. She earned her first Emmy for playing Barbara Baldwin in “Chronicles of Jessica Wu,” winning outstanding actress in a short form comedy or drama series in the 2023 awards cycle.
Her credits span “Harlem Nights” (1989), “Stompin’ at the Savoy” (1992), “Boy Meets Girl” (1993), “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “Melrose Place,” “Living Single,” “Touched by an Angel,” “That’s So Raven,” “Dead Like Me,” “K.C. Undercover” and “The Vampire Diaries,” alongside Atlanta theater work.
More recently, she portrayed Sylvia Wesley in the Wesley Christmas films, appeared in “Harlem,” “Grosse Pointe Garden Society” and “Poker Face,” and worked in the 2025 films “Noah’s Arc: The Movie” and “90 Days Past Due,” followed by Lifetime’s 2026 “Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery.”
Before the appearance debate, Guy thanked her castmates for celebrating her while she could appreciate it. Her latest message likewise urged less judgment and more love, memories and living.
