Business Spotlight: Silly Rabbit Turns a Comedy Dream Into a Baton Rouge Destination

BATON ROUGE, La. — Before Silly Rabbit Comedy Club had a permanent stage on Airline Highway, it was an ambition carried by a comedian who wanted to build a place where other performers could shine.

Today, the club at 9945 Airline Highway, Suite C, represents the next chapter in founder Shedrick “Seddy Sed” Marshall’s journey from performing and producing shows to operating his own entertainment venue. Opened in January 2022, Silly Rabbit was identified at its opening as Baton Rouge’s first Black-owned comedy club. Its intimate setting included seating for more than 140 guests, a stage and a bar.

The business also reflects a family effort. Marshall’s wife, Lisa, and their daughter, Shalyn, have played integral roles in the operation. The club’s website identifies Shedrick and Lisa as its owners.

Marshall’s comedy roots stretch back to 2001, when he began hosting comedy skits at Baton Rouge’s Lincoln Theatre under the name Anough Sed Productions. He adopted the Silly Rabbit Productions name in 2008.

His creative work extended into acting, including his film “Loves Gonna Getcha,” which addressed sexually transmitted diseases, and a role in the short film “Extrication.” In March 2015, Silly Rabbit Productions began presenting monthly comedy shows at the Belle of Baton Rouge, laying groundwork for his eventual move into club ownership.

At Silly Rabbit, that experience has translated into programming that brings local performers and nationally recognized comedians into the same room. Early headliners included Ashima Franklin, Mario Tory and Shaun Jones. The venue has also hosted poetry readings, open mic nights and private gatherings, giving the business several ways to connect with audiences beyond stand-up comedy.

The club describes its mission as “To entertain, bring happiness and provide quality — one laugh at a time.” Its open mic program offers developing performers a place to gain stage experience, with the club directing participants to call or check social media for the next scheduled session.

For readers planning an October outing, advertised upcoming performances include:

  • Kerwin Claiborne, Oct. 2–3: The comedian is listed for a weekend engagement at Silly Rabbit. Guests should confirm individual performance times when purchasing tickets.
  • Ronnie Jordan, Oct. 10: An evening comedy show is listed from 8 to 10:30 p.m.
  • D Roc & Friends Costume Comedy Show, Oct. 31: The Halloween event pairs comedy and costumes, with an advertised schedule of 8 to 10:30 p.m.

Show schedules and ticket availability should be confirmed directly with the club. For information, visit sillyrabbitcomedyclub.com, call 225-773-7206 or email contact@sillyrabbitcomedyclub.com. The website posts a two-drink minimum.
