Southern University restores power after campus-wide outage; classes resume Wednesday
Power was restored across Southern University’s Baton Rouge campus Tuesday after an outage forced the university and several affiliated institutions to close. Classes and normal operations were scheduled to resume Wednesday, Sept. 2.
BATON ROUGE, La. — A campus-wide power outage disrupted classes, dining and daily life at Southern University on Tuesday. Still, crews restored power across the Baton Rouge campus, allowing normal operations to resume Wednesday, Sept. 2.
The outage initially prompted university officials to delay classes and campus operations until 1 p.m. As crews continued investigating the disruption, however, the university announced that the Baton Rouge campus, Southern University Law Center, Southern University Ag Center and Southern University Laboratory School would remain closed for the rest of the day.
The disruption also affected student services. Limited meal service remained available at Dunn and Mayberry dining halls, although Mayberry later closed. Power began returning to student residential areas by about 9:30 a.m., according to reporting from the scene.
For students, the outage meant more than a temporary inconvenience. Some expressed concern about missed instructional time and the possibility of having to make up coursework after classes resumed.
University officials did not immediately provide a cause for the outage or an estimate of how much instructional time was lost. The university’s restoration announcement did not identify any additional changes to Wednesday’s academic schedule.
