Baton Rouge, LA – Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University, in partnership with Future Health Professionals, will host a Future Nurses Program Summer Camp July 19-21 at FranU’s School of Nursing.
Out of 60 applicants, 24 students were selected based on their application, essay, and letters of recommendation.
Participants will learn about nursing careers, infection control, therapeutic communication techniques, patient confidentiality, medication administration, wound care, and mental health. They will also participate in interactive sessions in the nursing skills lab and Simulated Education Teaching Hospital. Undergraduate and SETH faculty will facilitate each session.
“The Future Nursing Camp is a great opportunity for high school students to experience the world of nursing. Our goal is to introduce participants to the roles and skills of registered nurses. I anticipate that this experience will help them make an informed decision about pursuing a career in nursing. In addition, this is a valuable recruitment opportunity. I hope this experience will pique their interest in nursing and FranU School of Nursing,” said Carla A. Harmon, associate professor director of nursing.
Some planned activities include discussing what nursing is, the different career paths in nursing, learning about HIPAA and codes of ethics, PPE, proper needle selection and needle safety, and assessing how to complete one. They will learn about vital signs and how to take them. They will also learn about body mechanics, transfers, and wound care. The camp will conclude with award presentations.
