Southern Lab Seizes Redemption: Clinches Division IV Select Girls Championship

HAMMOND, La. — The Southern Lab Kittens sought redemption after a bitter defeat in last year's Division IV select title game against Northwood-Lena. With determination and grit, they not only avenged their loss but also clinched the championship, outplaying their opponents in a 56-41 victory at the University Center on Friday, March 1, 2024.

Coach Quinna Chaney, a former Southern Lab, and LSU standout, fueled her team's motivation by reminding them of their previous defeat, displaying the bracket and final score in the locker room. The message was clear: the ultimate goal was a victory on the final day of the season at the LHSAA girl's state basketball tournament.

Chaney's strategy paid off as the top-seeded Kittens dominated the court from start to finish, leaving no room for doubt. The team, led by MVP Asia Patin, showcased a perfect blend of defensive prowess and offensive strategy, never relinquishing their lead throughout the game.

Patin, standing at 5-foot-4, delivered an outstanding performance with 18 points, 13 rebounds, and two steals, earning the admiration of the crowd and her teammates. Alongside her, Gabriell Hill and Kinsley James contributed 13 points each, with James also securing 10 rebounds. Despite a formidable effort from Northwood's Rhianna Battes, who scored 22 points, Southern Lab maintained their composure and executed their game plan flawlessly.

The victory marked Southern Lab's second Division IV title in three years, solidifying their status as a powerhouse in Louisiana high school basketball. For Patin, the win was not just about redemption; it was a testament to the team's resilience and determination to succeed against all odds.

As the final buzzer sounded, Coach Chaney and her players celebrated their hard-earned victory, donning sunglasses and radiant smiles—a stark contrast to the disappointment of the previous year. With their heads held high and the championship trophy in hand, the Kittens proved that perseverance and dedication can turn dreams into reality.

Northwood, despite falling short in their bid for a third consecutive title, displayed commendable sportsmanship and resilience until the very end. As Coach Lashonda Smith-Cooper remarked, her team gave their all, leaving nothing on the court—a sentiment echoed by players and fans alike.

In the end, Southern Lab's triumph was not just a victory on the scoreboard but a testament to the indomitable spirit of a team united in pursuit of excellence.
